The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is currently at the Manila North Port Terminal, assisting 99 Badjaus who have been stranded since Jan. 17.

A P5,000 financial assistance per family is being distributed. Family food packs, as well as personal and hygiene kits, are also distributed to the strandees.

The stranded Badjaus were supposed to return to their home provinces, but they were not allowed to travel for health and safety issues because the majority of them were unvaccinated and had lapsed RT-PCR test results.

The city of Manila has already helped the stranded indigenous peoples by giving hot meals and facilitating their vaccination. The DSWD is negotiating with the Manila City LGU to see if they can continue to provide hot meals to the stranded individuals until they can return to their homes.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) also provided a space in the waiting area/parking area inside the premise of Pier 4 for the strandees. The PPA will also set up tents for them to use as temporary shelter.

In addition, 2Go Travel will assist the stranded Badjaus in rebooking.

Aside from providing food and other basic needs, the DSWD, in collaboration with the City of Manila, PPA, and 2Go, is currently profiling IPs to identify what other interventions they need.
