Masbate rocked by twin earthquakes

THE province of Masbate was rocked by two earthquakes on Wednesday morning, according to a report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). 

According to Phivolcs, the first quake was felt at 9:29 a.m., some 6 kilometers northeast of Masbate City. It had a magnitude of 3 and a depth of 10 kilometers.

Intensity IV in Masbate City and the nearby Aroroy town, and at Intensity II in San Jacinto, Masbate. 

According to state seismologists, Intensity IV is "moderately strong", in which vibration is felt like the passing of a heavy truck and hanging objects "swing considerably."

A few minutes later, after the first earthquake, a stronger magnitude 4.8 quake struck 7 kilometers northeast of Mobo town. 

It had a depth of 5 kilometers, and it was felt at a "strong" Intensity V in Masbate City. 

Phivolcs said at this intensity, strong shaking may be felt throughout a building, hanging objects swing violently, and vehicles rock noticeably. 
 
The 2 quakes are not expected to have aftershocks or damage, according to Phivolcs.
