Meralco pins Commissioner’s Cup hopes on NBA vet O’Bryant

August 19, 2022 - Friday 3:08 PM by GDM

Meralco is hinging its PBA Commissioner’s Cup bid on former NBA player Johnny O’Bryant.

“I think we hit a home run,” Bolts mentor Norman Black said.

O’Bryant played four seasons for the Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets and Charlotte Hornets. He arrived in town on Wednesday, seeing his future teammates shown the door in the Philippine Cup Final Four.

Though optimistic, Black knows he has to temper his expectations as the the a PBA conference tend to be short and quick.

“We’ll wait and see. We’ll wait until the games start, but I think we got a good one.”

O’Bryant stands 6-foot-9, an inch shorter than most of the imports tapped by other ball clubs, which is also the maximum allowed for the league’s second tournament.

Black, a decorated PBA import himself, said his new ward bolsters Meralco’s inside presence—which should be handy for this upcoming bid.

“You can see how sometimes, height and weight can make a difference in the game, particularly when that person is very, very skilled, like June Mar,” Black said.

“So we have to bring in imports that will fill that position for us. That’s how we’ve been able to do well in the import conferences in the past. Hopefully we’ve done it again this time around with our import coming in.”
