The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel had started cleaning up the waterways and conducted dredging operations to help alleviate flooding ahead of the rainy season.

"Tuloy-tuloy ang paglilinis ng ating estero para alisin ang bara ; pagtatanggal ng mga campaign materials na preventive measure para hindi magdulot ng pagbaha [We continue to clean our estero to remove the garbage blocking it; remove campaign materials as preventive measure so as not to cause flooding]," MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said.

Part of the preparations, Artes said, are the rehabilitation of the pumping stations and the construction of new ones under the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Artes also assured us that they had already conducted an inventory and that there was enough fuel for the pumping stations so that its operations would not be interrupted.

The MMDA chief cited that Quezon City is one of the flood-prone cities.

"But it [flooding] subsides easily," Artes said.

He added that the agency also placed
trash traps to block the garbage from entering the agency-manned pumping stations.  There are 30 pumping stations in the metropolis.

"Pinapapalitan ang makina nito na parte ng rehabilitation sa ilalim ng World Bank project [The machines of these pumping stations are being replaced as part of the rehabilitation under the World Bank project]," he concluded.
