Neri Colmenares to run for Senate in 2022 polls
September 23, 2021 - Thursday 4:09 PM by GDM
Former Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares, a known human rights lawyer, said on Thursday that he will seek a seat at the Senate in the 2022 national elections.
“The officers, leaders of Makabayan have decided that I will run,” he said in an interview with ANC’s Rundown.
“I will run for a Senate seat in 2022 if only to deliver the sharpest message of critique to the candidate of President [Rodrigo] Duterte,” Colmenares also said.
This will be Colmenares’ third bid to join the Senate. He also ran in the 2019 midterm polls but finished outside the Top 20 circle.
Colmenares is currently the chairman of Bayan Muna and of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers. He is also one of the legal counsels of families of “drug war” victims that sent communication against Duterte before the International Criminal Court.
He said in the interview that they believe they also need to win over Duterte’s supporters to secure victory for the opposition.
The rights lawyer said that during senatorial debates and campaign season, they “have to deliver that message to explain to people that Duterte was the not messiah he pretended to be, that Duterte is nothing more than another Trapo (traditional politician) who makes promises to get votes but refuses to deliver them.”
He said he will run on a platform that will push for needs and welfare of the “basic man,” including higher wages for workers, genuine agrarian reform, protecting the West Philippine Sea, and crafting a pandemic response that addresses the needs of the people.
