The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary Sarah Lou Arriola said on Thursday, Mar. 17, the number of Filipinos repatriated from Ukraine after the Russian invasion has risen to 329.

"As of last night, 329 na po lahat-lahat na mga Filipino ang nakauwi po, (There are 329 repatriated Filipinos as of last night,)" Arriola said in an interview.

She also stated that 41 Filipino seafarers were evacuated from the former Soviet state and are awaiting return.

"Meron pa rin pong mga nasa Black Sea pero hindi po lahat sila gustong umuwi e. Kasi iba ibang lugar po 'yun, (There are still those in the Black Sea, but not all of them want to go home yet because they are in different locations,)" the DFA undersecretary added.

Arriola also stated that other Filipinos want to stay in their merchant ships since they have food and provision. They believe that they are safe in their respective areas.

Meanwhile, despite Moscow's ongoing assault on key Ukrainian cities, few Filipinos have chosen to remain in the European state.

According to Arriola, 19 of the total stayed in Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, due to marriage to locals or work.

"We are in constant contact with them. Nagche-check po tayo. 'Yun nga 'yung kasamaang-palad, we are mandatory repatriation na po, mandatory evacuation. Pero meron pong talagang ayaw talagang lumikas, (We are checking. We are mandating repatriation, and evacuation. Unfortunately, some do not want to evacuate,)" Arriola asserted.

The DFA undersecretary mentioned that other Filipinos hope that the situation will cease.

“Kasi ang kinatatakutan ng mga kababayan natin, baka hindi na sila makabalik tapos nanghihinayang sila sa opportunities po, (Because what our compatriot fear is that they may not be able to return, and then they regret the opportunities,)” she added.
