A man posed as a customer of a sari-sari store before stealing P1,150 worth of cigarettes in Valenzuela.

Joel Oronce, a resident of Caloocan, ordered the cigarette packs at a store in Barangay Mapulang Lupa.

He then distracted vendor Maritess Alvarez with more orders before escaping with the stolen cigarette packs, the Valenzuela police station said in a statement on Monday.

The vendor and bystanders in the area chased the suspect, drawing the attention of the police resulting in his arrest.

The suspect was cornered by PSSg Rio Agustino and PCpl Al Sanchez, who recovered the stolen items.

The police officers frisked the suspect, who yielded a folding knife in his possession.

The suspect will face charges of theft and illegally possessing a deadly weapon, police said.
