EJ Obiena kicked off his 2023 campaign with a silver medal finish in his first tournament of the year.

The World No. 3 pole vaulter placed second behind Sam Kendricks in the Internationales Springer-Meeting in Cottbus, Germany on Wednesday (Thursday, Manila time).

Obiena cleared 5.77m in one try but failed to leap past 5.82m thrice.

Kendricks was the only competitor who cleared the 5.82m bar in just one attempt.

Belgium's Ben Broeders took home the bronze with 5.72m.

Obiena needed three tries to jump 5.50m, but he cleared both 5.67m and 5.77m in the first try.

The Filipino Olympian is set for another busy 2023 season with Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games, and the World Athletics Championships just around the corner.
