Embattled pole vaulter EJ Obiena is set for surgery to fix his knee issues, according to businessman and long-time mentor James Lafferty.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News’ Dyan Castillejo, Lafferty said that the Tokyo Olympian will have his meniscus cleaned on his left knee.

"The MRI was not clear on some of the other parts of his knee, it's quite unique what they're gonna do. EJ is gonna be conscious during the surgery," said Lafferty.

"They'll go in and clean up the meniscus, which is a quite straightforward procedure. Now, the doctor's gonna take a look around. If he sees something else that has to be fixed, he wants EJ conscious, so that he can literally ask him on the spot, 'Do you give me permission to do x or y?'" he added.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has committed to giving financial assistance to the 26-year old for his knee surgery.

"Obiena needs help for his medical procedure, which we just approved yesterday, to take care of his surgery,” PSC Chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez told the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum webcast, Tuesday.

Obiena is currently involved in a funding rift with the Philippine Athletic Track and Field Association (PATAFA), though both sides have agreed to submit to mediation conducted by the PSC.

Obiena, who currently holds the Asian mark of 5.93 meters, will be competing in the Init Indoor Meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany starting on January 28.

He will also participate in the Asian Indoor Athletics Championship, which will run from February 11 to 13 in Kazakhstan.
