President Bongbong Marcos is keen on keeping Erwin Tulfo in his administration, noting he did a “very good job” in his service as former Social Welfare Secretary.

“The time he was running the DSWD, he did a very good job. So, we can’t lose that kind of asset,” Marcos said during a panel interview with media personalities.

In addition, he was asked if Tulfo was being considered for a presidential adviser, a post in which the President denied and asserted they had other plans for him and would find something that he could do so they could “take advantage of his good instincts when it comes to social service.”

The chief executive noted the “difficulty” he faced at the Commission on Appointments (CA).

Last year, in May, Marcos appointed Tulfo as the Social Welfare department chief. However, the CA deferred his confirmation in November due to legal issues regarding his citizenship and criminal conviction for libel.

SAGIP Representative Rodante Marcoleta brought up Tulfo’s conviction for four counts of libel, which he claimed was an issue of “moral turpitude” that barred any individual from holding a public position.

Tulfo defended that he was found liable for libel for his previous work as a journalist.

Meanwhile, Caloocan First District Representative Oscar Malapitan raised Tulfo’s experience in the United States Army in 1988 and his renouncement of Filipino citizenship.

He asked for Tulfo’s citizenship and his “active” military assignment stationed in Europe from 1992 to 1996.

Tulfo admitted after the hearing that he became a citizen of America in the late 1980s, but he renounced it this year.

In late December, former broadsheet reporter Edu Punay was named as the DSWD’s officer-in-charge.
